I would use a Kohler rod over an aftermarket version.
The cam should have shims on the end already. My cam end play was out a little as well. I found that the shims in there were worn down. I replaced them and it was back in spec.

If I go .020, I have not found a Kohler rod. Is there a part number I am not aware of?? All I found for Kohler is std and .010.
