The first thing that comes to mind is the bearings,if they were at all rough they will get hot and fail.It could also be what Matt said,i have done that kind of thing before  or it could be the new gears are not meshing right and are getting hot.Any way you look at it you are going to have to pull it apart to see whats going on in there.
