I rescued my 73 from a cold grave. No, it's not restored but I am always amazed at the power that 7 hp engine gives me when it is needed and I like the design of this tractor. It's all original and I hope that it remains that way. This winter, it plowed 4" of snow with an additional 3" of ice under it and the tractor seemed to ask....."Give me more!!!".
As a 73 owner, I would echo what others have already stated........rebuild and you'll be glad that you did!! If you need to get the 73 back in action quickly and a 12 hp is more feasible at this time (for the $$ or time or whatever), then save your 7 hp and rebuild it at a later date when it is more convenient. Many of us in this forum appreciate the craftsmanship and history of these fine machines and we don't dismantle or drastically alter them, unless absolutely necessary (ie. installing a hydraulic lift, etc..).
I'm sure we would all like to see some pictures of your 73.........
