So....in between various other tasks, I got around to the re-assembly of the hydraulic cylinder a few days ago.

First, I installed the head's O-ring and seal
Then I lubricated them with hydro fluid and carefully fit the rod through.
Then I placed the piston in a cushioned vise, being careful to allow for rod clearance. I applied blue loc-tite to the rod threads, and screwed the rod in as tight as I could get it without dislodging the piston from the vise. Again, I used a large screwdriver in the rod eye for leverage. Excess loc-tite was wiped off, and the unit was checked for absolute cleanliness.
I installed the lubricated piston O-ring.
