Disconnect sparkplug wire. With key off, solenoid should be extended. Key on should retract the solenoid. It is also spring loaded to extend.
Lee250, William is correct except for you need to ground the soenoid to the frame. When grounded the plunger will retract back into the body of the solenoid. Be careful doing this as a spark could ignite any fuel/vapor.
