Hey Duke, that ball will go into the rear coupler then the drive shaft should slide in next. Think it might keep the shaft from flexing too far in or something. My 1250 had the same ball with the hydro. Make sure the front drive shaft bushing is in good shape. This is a good time to replace it too.
