Ole 147:

1) The serial number style is just their way of numbering the gazillions of engines they made.

2)The Spec (ification) Number is also necessary because Kohler made those engines for hundreds of different manufacturers and other applications which had their own specific requirements, so Kohler uses the spec number to identify the exact characteristics of any particular engine. The one you cited is only for a K-241 found in a Cub Cadet (per IH specifications!).
