Default Tiller gear box lube?
I am in the process of sevicing my tiller gear box. I have read through a few posts where people are using 85-140 gear lube. Mine is currently packed about 3/4 full of what looks like wheel bearing grease. What is the correct lube for this? Thanks for any help

First thing we need to know is what gear box you have. I found out over the weekend that there are 2 styles. The early one is all cast with 2 plugs on he cover. The later one is aluminum. I assume you have the aluminum one and I think most people mix gear oil and grease together for the lube. If it's the early one, then it takes 80weight gear oil.

I have the 4 bolt mount aluminum one with the thin metal cover on it.

I have seem them filled with both grease,gear lube and a 50/50 mix.
If the seals are good/not leaking, I run gear lube 85W90/140
If they are weeping a bit, I put in gease.
