Hello everyone, My name is John and this is my first time posting here and have a few questions. Forgive me if this has already been asked but I have searched older threads and could not find an answer.
I have two QA-42 snow throwers (one only good for parts) I have pulled the gearboxes apart to check everything (Preventative maintenance I guess). Both gear boxes had grease in them, one gear box has a grease fitting on the cover and the other does not. Is the grease fitting original or did someone add it to the cover? How much grease should be in it? Do I pack it full? The reason I am asking is the older gear box (without a grease fitting) was about 1/3 fill of grease and the input shaft inner bearing apparently did not get enough lubrication and the shaft is now worn down from spinning inside of the bearing. I want to prevent this on the good gear box. I have also read somewhere on line about using gear oil in the gear box instead of grease. Any thoughts?

First welcome to OCC.
As for the grease fitting, I don't think that is OEM. It is true you can use either grease or gear oil in your gear boxes. The ones I have had, has always been filled with gear oil. I think it would work better and lube everything more evenly than grease. You would fill to the top of the gears. I can't be as much help with the grease issue as i have no experience with that. Some other guys will have some good advice for you. Just keep watching. ![]()

I use 85W-90 gear lube in mine. Orient the gearbox such that the removable cover is facing up, and fill it so that the gears are about 1/2 to 2/3 covered, no more, or when the oil expands when the gearbox is in use it'll come out of the seals.

Thank you, I think I will try the gear oil when putting it back together.

Yeah and definitely follow Matt's recommendations. I was following a PO's advice and after reading Matt's comment he is right, you have to have room for the oil to expand in there. Deleting that bit of info from my book... LOL

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
