Question Cast Iron Governor
Tonight I plan to remove the governor from a K301. Looking at the Kohler manual it looks straight foward. Any tips or trick before I start? Can it be reused? What parts should be replaced(it's leaking oil from the brass nut)?

John I would not reuse the governor gear. First part to go in and the last to come out.

Replace the governor cross shaft and bushing (the brass part). That will fix the leaking oil problem. If the governor gear is Cast Iron and it looks good, you can probably reuse it. If it is the plastic gear, replace it. It's all pretty straight forward and really just one way to pull things out and put them back in.

The cast iron governor is in excellent shape. The cross shaft is not. The rivet that mounts the tab that pushes on the governor is loose. One item I noticed is a mini roller bearing in the block the cross shaft rides in. Does this item ever need replacement?

I have not heard of anyone in here mentioning replacing that. I did not replace it in mine.

I can't imagine that ever wearing out. The forces on it are minimal. The only issue might be the fact that the shaft doesn't make full rotations, something rolling-element bearings don't like. I'd say if the shaft fits and doesn't wobble, I'd leave it be.

Thanks Matt for the insite on that part. Due to its location and the fact it looks ok, I'm not messing with it.
