I cannot figure this out and have about had it with this tractor. It will not stay running I start it up if it has not been run in a while it will run nice for about 10 mins. then the surging starts and it stalls out. If I pull the chock out it will stay running with the surging a few mins. more before it stalls out. I have rebuilt the carb twice to make sure, I have put new manifold gaskets on nothing seems to help. I have checked the manifold for cracks, there are none. I have sprayed carb cleaner all over the manifold to see if it will rev up but it doesn't. Any ideas would be great.

What brand carb is on it? If it's a Walbro...there's your problem.

You need a Kohler carb. A number 26 if I am not mistaken. Also you might check your coil. Possibly going bad. My 1250 would run about 10 or 15 minutes before it started acting like that. New coil and plug wire fixed it. Reason I put a new wire on was because the one that was on there was a car plug wire and did not have the solid core to it.

You can put a #26 on a mag 20? How about a mag 18?

Vince, check with Matt on that. I may be wrong in regards to the Mag engines. I was thinking of the KT twins like I had in the 782.

I think you can put a #26 on an M18 if you put the throttle and choke butterflies and shafts from the Walbro in it. It would probably work on the M20, as well.

So you guys are saying the Walboro carb suck? Why is that, poorly made?

I understand the Kohler carbs are superior to the Walbro but I don't think that's the problem here. Its has been rebuilt and adjusted to specs.

That sounds like a failing fuel pump to me. You can put a fuel pressure gauge on the line coming out of the pump; if the needle on the tester flops around while you are cranking it, the pump is bad. If it pumps up to about 2.5 psi and holds it, the fuel pump isn't the problem.
