1711 Hydro Maintenance
Well, the weather has finally turned comfortable enough that I can get out and do some needed maintenance on the 1711 hydro. I have needed a new fan for a few months and just recently I have noticed the hydro suddenly surge forward when normally it would have a consistent pull and only change speed when the hydro handle was moved. I knew that the hydro cam plates probably had some slop at the pivot pins and the trunion springs were probably week. On the plus side, upon inspection, the trunion had absolutely no wear, so no welding was needed, but as mentioned above all the other issues were present. I removed the plates, steel wheeled them down to bare metal and primed and painted them. There was around 3/16" gap in the big spring of the trunion. I found a washer that fit perfectly and removed all free movement of the spring. The trunion cam plate had back and forth slack from wear. I had some shims left over from a prior QL trunion fix and ended up using all of them, (8) to be specific to remove all the side to side slop of the plate. It now centers up over the springs perfectly. I should have it all back together tomorrow and it should be good for another decade or two.
 Back home from getting the tranny and frame washed off at the carwash  Nice and clean hydro, it was pretty nasty, sorry no before pics   Pretty new fan installed too  Nice and clean again  Plates cleaned and painted   Looking kinda sad  Trunion not worn or welded on.

Lots of gap between Spring and Guide pin  Washer installed to take up gap. The shims will slide onto the pivot pin just below the trunion. You can see it pictured here. I'll have more pics showing them installed.  Shims used to remove slop in trunion cam plate

Nice job. Just a heads up, your fan is on backwards, probably a PO screw up. This is a pic of the fan on a 1572, notice the curve in the blade.

Just got done finishing up the hydro maintenance. First, thanks Sam for noticing the backwards fan, I would not have caught that. It is now correct. Second, I can't believe the difference in how much better the 1711 feels now, with all the little things I did to hydro. There is no lag in forward or lurching. You set the hydro lever and it stays put. Not near as much whining from the unit now that the neutral position has been adjusted. Over all I am very pleased. Well worth a few hours of time to fix and repair. I was going to get the mule drive and subframe put on, then the deck, but as I was about to do that, I checked the mule drive pulleys and one was horribly notchy. Bearings just about shot. Will have to wait till Mon. to get up to the dealer and get a new one, then it will be good to go.
Fan turned the correct way, LOL  Nice clean and painted plates and shims  Shims on the back side are needed too

Probably better than when it was new. Nice job and good info for the rest of us.
