i rotate the engine by hand to top dead center and itch the engine rotation back and forth ever so slightly and i can hear it knock a little. move it passed TDC an inch or two and the knock/slop is gone. until i rotate it back around to TDC. is this piston slop at the top of the cylinder or something else? thanx guys

Without being there, I would "assume" that it could be excessive clearance between the rod journal and the crankshaft.

so what usaully wears first. rod or crank shaft?

The rod is made from Alum most times they wear and the crank dosnt. Still want to check to be sure its round.

it also could be your c/r spring ,has came off or broke ,and you hear the c/r weights knocking as they go around ,so place a rod next to the cam cover ,and up to your ear ,and do the same thing you did to hear the knock ,if so remove the cam cover ,and you should be able to see the spring ,if this is it you can replace the spring from the out side ,just tie a thread to the new spring ,before you try to replace it ,you will need to lift your engine some to do this ,.it worked for me .
