I turned this oak roller for my 44A deck on the lathe after work one day. It has a 5/8" shaft and wheel bearings from an Agri-Fab trailer wheel.
When it does fail, I'll just make a better one. Who knows, it might last a week or years. What do you think?

Being made from Oak it should last a long time. I noticed that the front roller on my 1711 deck has a lot of up and down movement. Looks like I will need to do some welding to keep it stationary.

If the wood was treated with any sort of sealer b4 installing it it should in theroy last for prolly decades . the only other wood that would be better that I know of is hedge(osage Orange) a quality piece of it untreated from solid stock would last a lifetime providing it wasnt damaged by a forigen object whilst mowing. Keeping it well lubed so as to not skid instead of roll will prolong the life aswell. If stored inside away from the elements I would be willing to bet as it is you would never need to replace it

Weren't the original one made of wood? The one old deck i had, had a wooden roller that i assumed was original and had lasted decades.

What type of wood were the original ones made from?
My 169 still has a wood roller on it. The 149 i had to replace, the previous owner had left the deck laying in the weeds for years and it took a toll on the one side of the roller. bllwnkl I would think the one you made would last for years

The roller on my 50 inch deck is wood. It looks old but good condition. I have assumed it came on the mower for my 1650 cub cadet. thanks Earl |

The original ones I believe were wooden and were tapered slightly toward the ends and thicker toward the center--at least that is the way that I have found them on many decks that I have seen.
You do very nice work and that should last you for 40+ years if you don't leave it out to the elements, but something tells me that you won't! Here's to your quality work ![]() Cub Cadet 123

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
