Wanting to add rear pto on a 982 rear. Which one or ones will work. Also, down the line would like to add on cat 0 lift. I don't see where that matters but thought I'd add that. Thanks for your help.

You have to have the Cat-0 lift to use the 3-point, and only the 3-point and rear PTO from another super will work. If your 982 has a cast iron rear, the rear cover plate you'll need must be from a 982 if the rest of the PTO came from a later tractor with an aluminum rear.

Matt is correct about the rear cover plate. My rear pto came off an 1872 and had the cover for the alum rear. I took a cover plate from a ci rear and fabricated the pto cover plate. Works great and the covers for ci rears are relatively cheap and available. Also, as far as the 3 pt goes, Ruegg makes a 3 pt like the original for use with the rear pto, if you can't find one used. I posted a thread when I did the install on my 982.

Not quite sure what I'm reading, sorry. Let me say I haven't started this project yet and I'm really going to struggle with it. I bought a 1572 with a cracked aluminum rear. I purchased a 982 cast iron rear to put in it's place. Now I've decided to put rear pto on while everything being changed over. So I want to be sure that all the parts I get will be right. Also would like to put on 3pt hitch on in the future ( probably can't afford right now). Trying to put all my ducks in a row without mistakes. Also thinking I'm going in the wrong order because having the 3pt hitch first makes more sense.

If you still have all of the internals from the aluminum rear, they will fit into the cast iron rear. The internals from the aluminum rear are stronger and have fine splined axles. Also, the axles have studs on them - makes tire removal/replacement a little easier. The cast iron internals have a bevel cut ring and pinion, while the aluminums have a straight cut, so if you decide to switch these out, you'll have to change out the pinion shaft or swap the ring gears. I swapped everything for my 982, pinion and diff, and it works great. Just my

Hey Maddog, Did you happen to take any pictures of your project? Would help me to get a visual. Will try to do a search to see if there are other rear change outs.

If you use the 982 rear end, you'll need the cover for a pto rear end. Good news is that http://www.ihccw.com has a plate that will fit your needs. Look under the Front and Rear PTO section and look for a red plate labed "USED REAR COVER PLATE ASSEMBLY IH 135616 C2 703-0449". That is the cover you need. After you get the cover installed, you can start looking for a complete pto setup. They are hard to find and usually cost around $500 to buy one, but once you have the correct cover installed, then you don't need to get back into the rear end to install the rest of it. Everything else is external.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
