Default 3000 Series Deck Rebuild

Getting my deck ready for mowin season. I got this deck off of a 3165 that sat outside for a few years and had some major rust. I don't know what type of paint the factory used but it is crap. It doesn't stick to anything. I pulled every nut and bolt off, soaked all the parts in my electolysis tank except the deck and sand blasted what I could. Picked up some PPG paint and sprayed 1 quart with hardener today. I guess I need to sand and spray some more primer. This metal is pitted bad. Should I use some spot putty to fill in some of the pits? This is my first time spraying paint so let me know if I'm doing something wrong. I'm going to do a light wet sanding with 500 grit and then primer again and maybe wet sand with 800. Then I will spray the top coat......I'm done for today. Now I need to go watch the Bristol race and drink a few cold ones!

Mine has the same paint issues, but not exclusively on the deck! GRRR! The paint is peeling on my whole tractor! The hood, the floor pan, the deck, fenders, etc.! Whatever they used it was CRAP!

Sprayed the 2nd coat of yellow yesterday. This deck has some major pitting from all the rust that it had. Maybe I can start reassembly this week. I need to figure something out on the rollers on the back. Cub wants about $160 for 4 of them.

I don't think Cub or any of the manufactures prep metal or use primer these days. Seems like since the Cyclops era the paint is only good till they get it out of the showroom. It got even worse with the 2000 & 3000 series.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
