Default Another new Mainer

Hi, I recently picked up a Cub built 682 (serial 720xxx). It's a project but runs and works. It's all there. It seems to leak a good bit of oil and smokes some too. It has a 44" deck and a 42" snow thrower. I like it! I think it's perfect for me. I drive a Harley and loved to fix up old Jeeps and 70's Chevy 4x4 Trucks. I wasn't planning on buying a project, but it was meant to be.

My last few lawn mowers have been 96 Husqvarna LT120 with a 38" deck I bought new... I hated it, bunch of little issues, but it wouldn't die. Finally the wiring harness melted so I got a chance to get rid of it. I'm glad it's gone. I was then given a late 90's Simplicity Lawn Tractor, don't know much about it because it lasted about two hours before I blew the engine... I really liked it for the couple hours I got to ride it. Mowed nice and was the first hydro I have ever used. I might rebuild the engine if it is cheap enough. Cool rig!

I was looking for a replacement but I just moved into a new house and my little Toro snow blower won't cut this big driveway. A perfect opportunity for a Garden tractor! Newer stuff is too expensive. I looked at some Craftsman and they were just like my old POS Husqvarna. I finally was deciding between a JD 110, A bigger Simplicity, and this Cub 682. The JD was only a 10hp, manual tranny, but already restored. The simplicity was ugly as sin and too far away, but was fully hydro and needed nothing. The Cub was in town, but needed some work. I got the price down but still paid too much. But it was a nice family, original owner.

So now it begins! I found the Kohler service manual online, I found the tractor owners manual online, now all I need is the tractor service manual. It came with a set of piston rings, I am going to buy a gasket/seal set and pull her apart.

My first post (well, second now) will be any suggestions/recommendations on rebuilding the Kohler KT17S Series... 1

Stay tuned!

Default New Guy from Texas

Howdy All,
And Thank You for letting me join here.
Well a little about me? I have been a Mechanic most all of my life. Became a single father of 2 about 10 years ago. I started working on everyones riding mowers as a side job to make ends meet, & it was something I could do at home & still take care of kids. I have restored some old ones and have a good collection of my own. My 10 year old Daughter and I are into Garden Tractor Pulls and If I can I will down load pictures of our Pride and Joys. I have a 582 and She had a 108 last year but I built her a new one for this year and its a 1450. I have restored some SOB's that is
(Some Other Brands) and even some Green ones but I really like the Cub's. I also have a 1969 Montgomery Ward tractor that was my Dads that has every attachment they offered, all still works and it looks like its only a few years old not 40+.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
