Exclamation Brakes in Cub Cadet 104

Okay. So I just recently picked up a non-running Cub Cadet 104 from a guy who "just want it gone, its an eyesore". Lets just say I was glad to take it off his hands for $40. So I brought it home, changed the coil and it fired up after 2 yrs of sitting. Well I ran it a little, and shut it off and it seems like the brakes have semi-locked up. Even with the brake pedal not pressed it feels like I'm pushing against the brakes, like they are 1/2 applied or something. I have checked the linkage, but my question is what is the best way to see what is going on with the brake? I haven't opened a tranny on one of these. Tips? Tricks?

- Thanks, Cory

I know you all love pics so, here she is!

Yup, I know and he was going to just give it to me, but he had bought a new carb a couple years ago and it costed him $40. So he wanted his money back for that. Its amazing what people will just get rid of. He was tired of the gas going bad/ battery dying because he rarely used it... Some people. Lmao

Might want to push in on the lever that actuates the internal brakes (underneath, there should be a long lever in the front of the transmission connected to the linkage to the clutch) or take a hammer and LIGHTLY tap that casing around that plunger that goes to the tranny. It may be a little froze up from sitting.

Cool score!

I like those wheel weights.

Wanna get rid of 'em? I would really like a set of yellow ones for my cub...

I think this post was to see if he could find a way to fix his brakes, not to see if he wants to sell his wheel weights.

I suggest sending him a PM instead if you are going to do that.

IACubCadet, you are correct that was my intention with this post (and to show off my Cub!! ) Although it may be against the rules of the forum, I personally don't mind if posts get de-railed. And sorry, Nothing is for sale. I am using this tractor (hopefully) this winter for plowing, and my other 104 for snow throwing and will need all the weight possible. As it is, my other 104 is missing 1 rear wheel weight.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
