I just finished rebuilding the carb for my model 70 and it runs great. The one thing that is happening is that after it runs for a while and I shut it off, it is hard to start and looks like it is flooded when it finally gets going. It then runs great until I shut it off and try to start it again.
Anyone know what's going on? It's got me stumped.

99% of Kohler K engines I have fooled with run kind of lean at the start.
Have you tried choking? ![]() If this Kohler sits more than 10 minutes, absolutely, positively, you got to choke it to get it to start. ![]() And, it even has a Cub gas tank and carb!!

Mine always has to be choked upon startup even when warm. Usually needs a quick jerk of the choke cable and it's running no problem.

I don't think I understand what this means.
What was it doing before and what made you decide to rebuild the carburetor?

I rebuilt a Kohler carb, because the Walbro was junk. When I restart it after it has been running, it starts hard and I get black smoke like it's running very rich, then it's fine.
I have to open the throttle wide open to get it to start, and choking it does not work at all, no matter where the throttle is set.

Just out of curiosity what size is the Kohler carb that you replaced the Walbro with? You should be able to look in the choke end of the carb and see a number. If it is a size 26 it's to big a carb for the 70. I think that it should be a 20 or 22mm.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
