Default 1430 Eletrical issue

Helping someone that owns a 1430 and I'm pretty stumped. The only indicator light that works is the full throttle required. Turn the key on, it starts up fine, ammeter is at 0. Try shutting it off and it sometimes will hang for a few seconds before it seems the ignition is cut. PTO doesn't work at all, and light doesn't come on when engaged. It also sometimes will give a mild shock at the ignition key so I'm thinking it is a ground issue. Another thing is how are you supposed to remove the cover behind the steering wheel with all the gauges and switches hooked to it?

I visually checked what I could but I wasn't able to find anything. He said this began happening after he was charging the battery with the engine running and dropped the charger on the ground. Said it immediately shut off and he didn't see any sparks and the terminals weren't switched up.

I'm really out of my element with tractors in general so any suggestions on where to go from here? I noticed the two diodes in the wiring diagram. I wonder if maybe those are the culprit. Anyone know what amp and voltage they are rated for?

Here's a wiring diagram I found.

Two possibilities:
* The Ignition Switch is bad (internal contacts are pitted or dirty)
* The Ignition Switch has a high resistance ground connection. Check with a VOM or DVM to see if there is zero ohms resistance between the Ignition Switch case and the negative terminal on the battery.

You realize, that someone has to be seating in the seat, and the tractor has to be NOT in reverse for the PTO to work.

With that in mind, there are four possibilities;

* Bad PTO Switch
* Bad Reverse Switch
* Bad Reverse Relay
* Bad Seat Switch

With a VOM or DVM, check each component for proper action.

Sounds like a bad Ignition Switch.

x-2 on the Ignition Switch or PTO Switch.

Okay thanks I'll check those out. What is the easiest way to get to the wiring and switches behind the dash? Remove the fuel tank?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
