Default Gas Tank Bracket for my 8hp Kohler Engine

I'm going to start working on my Cub Cadet 71 and noticed that the bracket for the gas tank looks to be homemade and doesn't allow access to the spark plug. It's a Cub Cadet 71 but has a 8hp Kohler engine. I can't seem to find any to buy so I'd like to fabricate some new brackets but can't seem to find any good pictures and wondered if someone could take a couple pictures for me.

Thanks,

Kyle

I definitely don't think that's a factory setup. If you wan I can look and see if I have a spare mount. I THINK I have one in the pile-o-parts somewhere.

The 7 had 8hp use the same bracket.

For starters, it looks like the straps are on upside down

Well, I think Roland has hit the bull's eye on identification fact finding questions. However, if what Lew says is correct about the Kohler K161 fuel tank support bracket, I would recommend buying a good used tank support. This would indicate two engines being of identical shape and size. So then if the internals, or spec size of inside components are slightly different, I assume the 161 tank support would fit the 181. Hopefully we can get some more opinions,...

Whom ever made the custom tank support, and clutch shield didn't do such a bad at trying! Not being able to locate the spark plug can often be discouraging. The advice about the tank straps are important. Before long, a fuel leak can quickly develop. Use some new oil lamp wick when properly installing the tank AND straps. Take note of the strap form. That is a nice looking 71, just happens to be my favorite one!

They have the same part # and yes the straps only go on one way, bolts facing the grill and on the bottom of the tank

Just FYI: The tank straps are installed upside down. The nuts & bolts should be on the bottom of the tank as Dark Minion pointed out, and then you'll see how those strap zig-zags will fit nicely to the mounting bracket as designed.

That's why the clamps are on up-side-down, makes it easier to get the tank off to get at the plug.

Yes, 7 and 8 hp engines use the same tank mounting bracket.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
