I did a search on the forum and got multiple hits for relining the brakes. Only question that remains, is that there were multiple suggestions on what brake material to use. What worked the best, 3/16" or 1/4". I thought I saw in one posting that with the thicker material, the fit was tight and had to be driven around a while to loosen it up.

which has changed to new part number 6175K819 it seems different than what I have ordered in the past. It stinks so bad I had to remove it from house, even out in open air it will knock you down if you walk by it !! The properties seem to have changed also it's just not as good in my opinion/experience. I would like to hear your review on the part number sam gave you if you order some. Also this is super easy to do if you have more than one cub I suggest ordering enough ( it's not expensive) to reline brakes on your others in future.

When I did this last year I used part #6175K828. Works great and just the right thickness.

I'm assuming the 2072 has the same brake pads at the 1872. Mine are virtually useless. With the brakes fully applied and the rod adjusted to the stop, the wheel still spins freely. I pulled them off and the inside pads are down to the rivets. They measure 3/16" thick. The outer pads look newer and are 1/4" thick.
If I order the 1/4" non-metal material from McMaster Carr, is JB weld a suitable adhesive for mounting the pads to the plate or should I be using something else?

JB weld should work just fine. I just used some 2 part epoxy. If you want to get a little more out of those you can put a shim between the backing plate for the pad and the brake arm to move the pads in tighter.

Thanks Sam!
I thought about doing either that to get a little more mileage out of them, but a couple of the rivet heads on the one side are touching the disc and I'm afraid I might wear a groove in the disc. I guess I'll see how the JB weld works. |

JB weld works good I use the marine type but any decent 2 part epoxy will work. Be sure to clean up the disc well most of the time they have rust crud on them a paint/rust stripper for electric drill works great you can get the paint/rust stripper at walmart or local hardware store made by 3m.
edit if you use epoxy use a medium grit sand paper to leave a semi rough surface on the metal you plan to apply the epoxy to, also use 99% alcohol to clean the surface of everything you plan to apply epoxy to.

Clint, when you replaced the pads that were riveted, you simply drill out the rivets to take the old pads off or were they glued as well?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
