old 4wd tractors?

So is there some old school brand of tractor that is 4wd? Old like our IH tractors. I saw this and thought it would be cool but wow very expensive. Thought there might be some old school tractor that might be fun to rebuild.Steiner 430 MAX

Wow that is cool. I was also hoping for something more like an older cub size tractor that came in 4wd. Was there anything back in the day that came in 4wd that was built cub strong that folks find and restore?

Yes, there were tractors like that built. But none that are easy to find, or that were made in the US that I am aware of.

Another experimental tractor built over the International 8-16 chassis was this four wheel drive prototype. Obviously Harvester was looking for a radically new tractor design to counter the raging competition. The heavyweight tractor market had collapsed from its own weight, but even the design shown here did not reach the assembly lines. It is obviously of early vintage as noted by the old style exhaust mounted vertically next to the radiator, probably about 1918.



On a side note, I found this interesting. The famous ball bearing crankshaft featured in the 10-20 and 15-30 McCormick-Deering tractors is shown here. These main bearings were guaranteed for the life of the tractor, and indeed, replacements were rare. Gone was the ever-present problem of adjusting the main bearings, and as a bonus, friction was substantially reduced. Due to the heavy dimensions of the crankshaft, a center main was unnecessary.

Now how come they don't make then this good anymore? All this information came from: 150 Years of International Harvester . By Charles H. Wendel, copyright 1981. Library of Congress 81-65316 . ISBN number : 0-912612-18-5 .

I recommend this book for the IH tractor enthusiast, and has all of EVERYTHING IH ever made up to date, including the War Production, and a page of the IH Cub Cadet equipment and line up.
