Default A late Hello from South Eastern NY

Hi folks. I actually signed up back in May of 2013. I didn't own a Cub back then so I thought I should just ask my few questions and an intro wasn't necessary. I was working on a 782 for a friend of a friend. See I'm that neighborhood guy that folks come to and drop off their 'whatever' in hopes I can breath life back into it for them.
This 782 sat for over 5 years. His wife finally said " Get that red tractor running or get it OUTTA HERE!"
It was back in May I asked some Linkage questions.
Aside from the linkage it took a bit of troubleshooting before the old girl ran and I was on my way.
The guy was ear to ear smiles.. I made a new friend. He always used the Cub for Snow Plow duties. The rest of last Summer he drove it around and would actually call to say "Yea Ha!" October 2013 I get a message on my phone. " Tony the thing is spewing Oil all over the place. I guess this old girl will constantly need attention , If you want it, come get it."
I felt bad I wanted to help him again but he was firm.. Take it or I'm scrapping it. I took it.
In the last few months, I found the oil issue and fixed it $0, I totally replaced a butchered harness with one I made. $0. I painted the Rims, Welded up some broken parts on the Snow plow and Greased every piece of linkage I could reach. As well as fixed the horrid 'Play' in the steering.. At the end of the day,This 782 has been extremely reliable as I have been running it around every few days just to make sure. Now that I feel that this will be a reliable machine.. Next up is a Filter and fluid change for the Hydraulic system. As it must be full of moisture. Below freezing days I get zero hydraulics for several minutes.
As you can see from my Avatar, The 782 (TUG) is alive and well.
That's my story , my long story

Tony

Welcome to OCC. Cool deal on the 782.

Used to spend some time out your way years ago at the Bridgehampton race track before they turned in into a golf course. Man I miss "The Bridge".

Welcome, that's a great story. So what was the "spewing oil all over the place" problem? Something just loose?

Being the nice guy I am, I felt bad that he wanted to just bail on his tractor. I told him to check what area was oil soaked and call me back.. I said it might be teh Carburetor Needle valve since I have seen it a lot with this gabage ethanol gas. "NOPE, Come get it."

I got there, and my thoughts were correct.. I pulled out the dipstick and there was so much gas in the oil, it washed the oil off the stick.
Ethanol gas beat up his Needle Valve in the carb and gas ran through the carb and into the crankcase. Prior to this, All the days I went there during the troubleshooting phase, he would shut the gas tank valve after I left. So no wash down. I told he can just... Nope, it's outta here.
got it home, drained the crank, filled it with some used oil I had laying around. ran it for 5 minutes.. no oil shooting accept from a valve cover. Drained the oil and filled again. Made a quicky gasket for the valve covers and the engine has been dry.
I since through in the same size needle valve I had. So I never have that issue, I added a gas filter and put a petcock in the engine compartment. Makes it so much easier to shut off. I shut the petcock and run it dry after I run it.
Ethanol gas.. very bad stuff for carbuteted engines. 2 cycle engines feel it the worst.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
