Default Model H-900 Groundsaw

A fellow contacted me through my website wanting to sell a NOS H-900 groundsaw. It was manufactured in 1968 and had never been used or mounted on a tractor. I purchased it from him, and he had it shipped to me by Fastenal. And as a plug for Fastenal, it was shipped from Washington state to southwestern Indiana for $150. I thought that was pretty reasonable considering this thing weighs a little over 300 pounds.

I got it mounted on a Cub Cadet but still don’t have the hydraulics completed. The original design requires that I cut a large hole in the front grill for mounting the pump. It was supplied with a coupling for the pump to be cantilevered on the front of the engine crankshaft. I think I’m going to try to belt drive it off the front PTO so I can engage and disengage the pump. Since this thing is only going to be used for show, it doesn’t have to be a real substantial connection. I don’t plan to ever put it in the ground!!

I’d like to save the original patina. Do you think Clear Coat would do that or does anyone have some other suggestions? Here’s a couple pictures:

If it were mine, and for show, I would go to NAPA, get the right color paint, and restore it, correctly,,,,

Original patina sucks, at a show, I NEVER look at those machines, I consider them neglected,,,,

You have gone this far, make the paint RIGHT!!

Heck, maybe, add some flames!!

This ain't even a show machine!!

Just my opinion,,,,,pretty paint is more fun to look at,,,,,,

Man did you score big time! I'd check with a good body shop about clear coating it. You don't want to use something that will mess up the original paint. Congrats on the find.

Wow!! That's all I can say...... WOW. NOS, and RARE!!!! Your a lucky dog!

I wouldn't clear coat it. That will make it shine. Just keep in it out of the weather. Honestly...... wax it. That will keep it looking nice. Rub WD-40 on the bare metal to keep it from rusting.

Does that tractor have the rear PTO so you can say it's "run-able"?

Nice score Paul,
I have a brochure in PDF if you need it.It is mounted on a 100 and uses the pulley on the clutch side of the motor to mount the pump.
Maybe you can use semigloss clear coat if they make it....

Anyone have any idea how many of these were actually made? I have only read of about 5 or so in existence. AFAIK, there are 3 members here with one, and I've seen on some other forums people who have either owned and sold, or currently own one. (IIRC, 2 out there that look different from the 3 on here.) So...... how many did they make?

Here's what I know about them:
~The pump is ran directly off the engine
~They drive the tractor through the rear PTO
~They were called a "Ground Saw" and were Hawk Built
~There was also one made by Vermeer

Hawk Built and Vermeer
Youtube vid of a Vermeer in action

Rare things intrigue me the most! No matter what brand they are. I like "rare" stuff.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
