Hello. My shop teacher has a cub cadet 1610 I am working on. There is one thing I'm concerned about. The tractor freewheels. (it's a hydro) I am not sure whether it is supposed to freewheel or not. I thought most hydros don't. also, is there a way to test the hydro without the engine. (the engine is in pieces) Thanks.

IIRC, the 1610 has a Peerless Transmission in it. I am personally not familiar with this transmission. I do see from the parts diagram, it has a "dump lever" which I believe, once engaged, you can move the tractor.
More experienced Peerless people will probably chime in on this.

thank you for the response. I don't know if the dump valve is released or not. when is it released and when isn't it? It has also been sitting outside for a while.

Should be a sticker next to the dump valve or on the tunnel telling you how to operate it.

ok, I just looked at the manual and it shows the dump valve on the floor of the tunnel cover. The tractor I'm working on has it under the fender pan by the wheel, and has no instructions on operating it.

Until you get it running, is there a reason to be concerned with the dump valve? you said it rolls free. Which, without an engine, is what you want...... I don't see the need for concern at this point.

I was concerned that the dump valve was in the run position and that the trans was damaged

It could be bad...... no way to tell until you run it.

so I followed the dump valve linkage and found the actual valve. The plunger thing is in the out position and appears to be stuck. Is the hydro engaged in the out position or the in position?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
