Default 1872 rearend bolts backed out

I have an 1872 with a ruegg 3pt, and a loader on the front. I had a 42' gannon earthcavator hanging off the back levelling out my yard, and saw a massive hydro leak.

It looks like the 3 lower bolts on the axlehousing that are used as the lower 3pt mount either backed off, broke off, or pulled the threads out of the housing.

Assuming that I can get the bolts out can these successfully be helicoiled / thick wall insert, or will that not hold up?

If that won't work then I'll probably go down the path of creating a cast iron rear from a 1450/1650 donor with the super innards. I'm not too enthused about that project as it's not something i've messed with before, and really don't have the time to spend right now.

At the very least I probably will need to pull the 3 point off, and then pull the axle out to fix this so i'd like to replace the gaskets / seals - not sure if anyone has the part number handy.

I found some relevant threads, but nothing specifically that answers the questions above

So did the bolts break off or fall out? I can't see from here. More investigation is needed.

If it pulled the threads or broke. Don't be scared of Heli-coil in aluminum. I have done it many times. USE a torque wrench and you will be fine. I know it's a long video, but it backs my point. For the $$ in this situation and installed properly, nothing beats it. I add a smear of jb-weld or red loctite to the threads when I install the insert, let it dry and chase it for good measure.

I don't know yet, I was so disgusted with the whole thing I just pulled it into the garage and parked it. Without taking the wheel off I don't know how bad it'll be.I know at least the front most bolt pulled the threads out - I guess that's better than cracking the case.

It's been a bit of a project. Got the loader subframe made, then found out the front main seal was leaking, as I took that apart found out the PO broke one of the mounting bolts for the PTO and it didn't work, then the hydro pump for the loader died, got that fixed, then the starter died, and now here I am.

Did you use longer bolts when you put the Ruegg hitch on? You can see in the pic below that I used bolts that are flush with the inside of the case when installed and torqued to spec. I just use the cheap TSC grade 8 China bolts you buy by the pound. I would also recommend that you put one of Sam's brace kits on. As Shrewcub said, looks like it's time to heli-coil it.

Thanks, that pic helps- I didn't remember those bolts went all the way through the case, so I should be able to helicoil it unless it's cracked/broken the case.

I did use the longer bolts that came with the kit, however I didn't check to see that they were actually the correct length and I guess I should have given the state of the rest of the "Kit". A handful of other fasteners weren't correct, and the bottom plate hole pattern wasn't drilled correctly to match the bolt pattern on the rearend. Bill didn't really seem to care when I spoke with him: didn't offer to fix it, and didn't offer a replacement or an apology. Pretty poor for a $500 part.

No matter how I fix the rearend I will brace it. My loader subframe terminates about at the rear, so I'll probably just weld some brackets that tie from the loader subframe to the lower 3 point brackets themselves. I also think it couldn't hurt to make a brace that goes off the bottom of each 3 pt. bracket under the rear-end to the other side. Should prevent those brackets from racking side to side. I don't really want to revisit this problem again - especially once I finally get the caddigger backhoe mounted to this monster.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
