Default 682 won't stay running

Yesterday my dad bought a cub cadet 682. It will not stay running unless the choke is all the way out. Dose the carb need adjusted or is it another issue?

Sounds to me like the carb needs to be dissembled, cleaned and rebuilt. My guess is that it's pretty well plugged up inside.

I agree with Sam 100%
but you might first see if you have good fuel flow to the carb.
check in-tank shut off valve screen, line filter?-- if good flow to carb,
then as Sam says, remove carb and get the ferrin' critters out of it.
It is easily done, and is prolly the problem

It's running but backfires. Adjusted both the top and side needle valves to 1 and half turn off and it runs better but has to have choke about half open to stay running. What are the correct settings for the top and side srews ? seems to be running somewhat hot and still backfiring.

Everything you have said indicates a carb that is at least partially plugged. It's running lean that's why you think it's hot. Go to the tech section and down load the service manual for your engine. The info you need is in it.

Edit: Here is the link for the manual. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=4649

Open up the top needle an additional 1/2 turn (main jet) and see what it does, it sounds lean.
You could have a point gap problem too.
And how are the plugs?
good fuel?-- old? has it been setting?
if it is your lucky day and all the stars are aligned you might get the carb off and cleaned up with damaging a gasket (s)
A couple of gaskets and needle seat is maybe $12.00 or so.
Down load the free service manual on here in tech section,-- lots of what you gonna need now and later.
Edit: you guys type faster than me.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
