Today I picked up a 1641 I bought from Ebay, it was cheap, only $225 with a 48" deck but as I suspected with over 900 hours it has some issues. The deck is badly rotted which was a disappointment but the big problem is the engine. It runs and moves but the seller said it lacks power and the oil light is on. The lack of power looks like a blown left side head gasket, low compression and heavy oil stains in the area where the gasket is. I pulled the oil pressure sender and put a gauge in it's place, oil pressure is zero. It appears the oil pump and the plastic drive gear is toast, and Partstree lists it as NLA. This is the first Vanguard in the fleet and I don't have a lot of experience with these motors, what else should I look for when I get inside? I hate to part it out because the rest of the tractor isn't too bad.

Pages 3 and 4 of this thread
http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=38502 contain some pictures of the engine out of my 1641 with a broken oil pump gear. I would recommend pulling the engine and getting it up on a bench. Lew sent me another cover and oil pump for mine but I still need to round up a dipstick. Does your dipstick look chewed up? Cannon |

Dipstick has a slight curve on the end but it's not chewed up, no visible marks.

Was that one of the multiple Cub Cadet items near Philadelphia? I was thinking hard about the 1863 and 1864. But, didn't need an additional project. If the tractor is nice, consider a repower.

Yep, that was one of the Ebay auctions out in Chester county, I bid on everything he had but this was the only auction I won. I was looking at the 1864 parts tractors for my 1864 project but I set a limit and didn't get caught up in a bidding war. Everything was still there when I picked this one up, all were rather crusty, most were parked where they died.

Well, looks like it's going to be a re-power or part out! In addition to no oil pressure, and a blown head gasket on the left side the piston on the right side isn't moving. It does run (poorly) but not sure why it isn't knocking or have a hole in the side of the block. I really didn't want to spend more than the tractor is worth on a new engine. I see that small engine warehouse show an 18hp vanguard as a replacement engine for the 1641, is the 18hp physically the same outside dimensions as the 16hp? What do you have to use off the old engine? I also read somewhere that the 14 vanguard is the same as the 16, only the carb stops are different. Is a short block an option?

Haven't found a shortblock yet, still looking, figured that would be the cheapest solution to get it running if I can't find a decent used motor.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
