Default 680-16hp briggs elect?

Can someone shed some light on the wiring for this combo? On the side of the block next to the starter is the voltage reg (I think) with a single red wire and a small stud that looks like a ground. My wire harness has a large red wire (starter) and a plug that has a gray wire and what looks like two pink wires in a single spade, the question is what to do with these wires? I think the two pinks would go to the red wire and the gray to the stud but I don't know and i don't wont to fry anything, so if this is good or there is more to this please let me know.
Thanks Dan

You need to get a wire diagram and study it.

You are going from a coil ignition to a mag ignition....yes....no...?

On a coil harness you will have a power wire to the coil. On a mag harness you will have a ground wire to the mag with will shut the motor down. Two different harenesses and ignition switches.

Some will say that it's a simple one wire fix....adaption....well I wish it had been that simple for me.....

I rewired a mag harness to make a coil harness and all is well but the pto will only run with the lights on...I'm going to start over again when I have time.

For example...the kill/safety switch at the seat is designed to "GROUND" a mag motor.....well you are not grounding a coil motor, what you are doing is opening the hot circuit and killing power....

The switch is different and the wires in the plug are in different positions.

I made two mistakes with mine....one is I made up the harness on the bench and wrapped it up and then I was short on the starter wire....wouldn't reach the soleniod....unwrap and start again...... and the second was the deal with power to the pto switch that I now have to fix...

New switch, rewire and think it through..

The answer is...of the motor the wires from the regulator run to the hot side of the ignition switch to charge in the run position... the other wire is the ignition ground switch...

You'll need an ignition switch for say a 1811.

Or a relay and a few extra wires...I'll see if I can find a wiring diagram that'll help.

Scott, Matt, thanks for the help! I figured it wouldn't be that easy thats why I asked. A wiring diagram would be great! Theres a company on line that repowers stuff but unless you are buying a kit they're not very helpful, but they're trying to run a biz so I guess I understand. This swap is getting interesting, stuff I didn't think about when I started... but thats half the fun of it! One step at a time.

Thanks Dan

R Bedell Thanks for the wiring diagram, this must be how the 680 is wired for the Kohler, so now I just have to figure out how to rewire for the briggs. I'm not sure what changes need to be done, as Murphycc stated there are some wiring changes that need to be done and this is where i'm lost. So if anyone has experience with this PLEASE help!.....the grass is getting tall:biggrin2.gif:

YES, that is because the tractor rolled out of the Factory with a Kohler.

NOW...retrofitting a B & S in this tractor will require some modifications.

With regards to the electrical side of this problem, one would need the B & S model number to specifically know how to wire this up.

Roland-

Do you have the diagram handy for putting an M18 into a 782? That requires similar wiring. He's putting a magneto ignition engine into a tractor wired for points/coil ignition, which is just like putting a Mag into a 782.

I've got a harness and switch I can send you, it's from a 1210. That should make it simple. Let me know.

This is a Diagram for installing a Kohler M-18 into a CCC built 782...

This is the Relay needed for the modification...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
