Default 2165 PTO Help

New guy here. Cool site you guys have. I really like all the old Cubs you guys have brought back to life!!

Yesterday, I scored what I thought was a pretty sweet deal. I picked up a 2165 for 50 bucks. It has exactly 600 hours on it. It also came with a folder containing the manuals and every receipt from servicing so I know it was taken care of regularly. It runs perfect and everything operates just like it should with the exception of the PTO. It will not engage. It doesn't do anything. I called a dealer and asked how to tell if the switch or relay is bad or if the clutch is really bad. He said it's never the relay. My reading around here and a couple other places says different. When I pull the switch when not sitting on the seat, the safety mechanism takes over and tries to shut down the tractor so I believe the switch is good. I'll go and pick up a relay this afternoon and try that so I can rule that out. Hopefully that fixes it but wanted to know if there is something else to be looking for? If I do wind up replacing that clutch, how big of a pain is it? Thanks ahead of time for any replies.

When I get this fixed, it will only be used for mowing, no heavy work in its future. Hoping to get many years of service from it.

Yup!! I'm pretty sure its just the relay also. I just went to the auto parts store to try and get one. The guy took it apart and it was all corroded. He cleaned it up and said I think it will work. Hooked it up to a bettery with a couple test leads and nothing. Now I just have to locate one to see if thats the problem.

I don't think the PTO's are too bad to remove if it is like I think. If is on the bottom attached to the crankshaft, all you will have to do is remove the LONG bolt that runs up thru it into the crank. An electric impact works nicely for this. Make sure the wire plug is disconnected. It is heavy and will need support as you remove the bolt.

Sounds simple enough. Thanks! Hopefully I dont even get into that. I found the relay through NAPA for $14 but had to order it. The PTO is $339 through the dealer. Havnt looked for aftermarket yet. I did have to replace the battery so if this relay is the problem then I just picked up a sweet mower for about 85 bucks!! I'll feel bad if thats all it is but I guess he should have done a little research before he listed it for 50 bucks, lol.

Check the bearings in the pto clutch before you buy a new one. I got replacement bearings at NAPA and put them in. Although the dealer says the clutch is non-serviceable, it saved me $225.... Good Luck

So, the relay I ordered from NAPA finally showed up today. Plugged it in and the pto fired up just like its supposed to. WOO HOO!! I did replace the battery so I have a grand total of $89 in this tractor!!

Now before I use it I'm going to do a complete tune up and I would like to put a mulching kit on it. I see that everyone likes the Gator blades so I'll go with those. Anyone know where I can find the mulching cover for a Model 301 48" deck? I cant seem to locate one anywhere. Also, is there an alternative oil than whats listed in the manual for the hydro?

Thanks for the help!!

I have the same problem you did, is there a part number for the relay you bought? I have checked the safety switches and if it is not the relay then it looks like a new PTO. Thanks for your help.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
