Default 42" deck spindle

My new to me cub 125 hydro came with a 42" deck on it but it seems that the center spindle is bad. Half of the shaft that mower blade bolts to is broken and missing right around where the key way sits. Does anybody know where I can get a new replacement spindle or if I can just rebuild this one? Here is a picture of what I'm working with.

Thanks,
Ben

There were about 4 generations of the 42" mower deck. How about some pictures of the entire deck so we know which generation you have...!!!

Yup, it sure would. I think I know which one it is, but I want to be sure.

Judging from the first picture you posted, it looks like the pulley is sloppy on the shaft and the key-way could be worn so close to the threaded hole that the bolt may not hold. If you clean the shaft up well, you may find that it is cracked between the key-way and the hole.

You might try putting the pulley on a different spindle to see how badly worn the bore is.

If by some miracle the shaft and the pulley bore aren't wore out, you can have a new key-way machined in the shaft 180 degrees from the existing one. If not then you will probably need a new shaft and pulley.

Go here and download the Parts Manual. Your generation of 42" mower deck is on page #21. Look at reference item #18. While you have this spindle apart, examine, clean, and replace any worn parts.

Thank you very much. Where is a good place to get these parts from? I doubt the local auto parts stores will have anything.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
