I am putting a 1250 cast iron rear in my 1872. I have the rear tore down and would like to put new bearings and seals in the axle tubes. Is there a good place to get them ? Are there any (aftermarket) or better bearings available ? Anybody's experience would be helpful.

I would go to a reputable place like Motion Industries and order USA-made bearings like Timken or SKF. There's no way to know what you'd get from CC...I've gotten alot of non-USA bearings through them.
Also, are you putting fine-spline axles and carrier in the rear? I would think about doing that because you're very likely to twist off a coarse-spline axle in a super. |

But I just don't know that it is necessary. I mean how many people have broke one and what were they doing when they did ? Plus I do not know exactly what needs done to the swap. I think the bearing area needs bored bigger,Because of the diameter difference of the axles. Any thing else ? And I have never set up a ring and pinion before, so I am alittle shy of that. Joe

No machine work is required. I'm going to put the guts from my 1872 rear into an iron case, since my aluminum case has been welded on.
As long as the donor aluminum rear is not from a Cyclops, there is no machining necessary. I have heard of several tractors with 26-12-12 rears (including a couple IH 982s with coarse-spline axles) twisting off axles while pulling a plow. 18+ hp combined with the extra traction provided by the larger rear tires is a recipe for a twisted axle or broken carrier. I have never done a ring and pinion either, but the manual's procedure is pretty good. I'll post a step-by-step process when I go about doing it. |

I've got coarse spline axles in all my rears, prefer them. Even in my 982 and I'll bet I've abused it more than anyone here abuses theirs. I've sold all my fine splines and not got less than $150 for the axles and carrier...suckers.
The bearings are the same size and unless they are damaged you don't need to change them. NAPA has the seals....# escapes me but they are listed in Toyman's thread here. CI is the way to go. Scott |

No machine work, that is nice to know. I thought I read somewhere the axle were different sizes. So now it is just a matter of setting up the ring and pinion. I will be looking forward to seeing your write up.
