Got engine out last weekend and starter shimmed. Cranks beautifully. Fired up, ran great for just under a minute then died like it was fuel related. Took the battery out. Plum dead won't take a charge. Dead short somewhere, hooked up something wrong? I'm not going to be able to do anything with it again until next week, heading down the road again, thanks for any suggestions.

IF....you have the original Onan engine, then yes, the tractor has to have to proper voltage going to the Ignition Coil.
Before you waste a lot of time and money, charge the battery up and take it to a reputable repair shop and have it "load tested". If not up to par....replace it. Once you have a known good battery that is fully charged, then we can move onto Plan B, if necessary.

Ok thanks for reply. I got the battery new from TSC one of their huskee brands by exide, 330 cca. I did have 12 volts to the coil. It fired up and ran nice, then died and I am not getting anything out of it now. Going to exchange it for a new battery and go from there probably not until Monday evening. Also it is the original Onan engine

IF......there were no issues with the battery, the engine would run longer than a few minutes even with a low or no functioning charging system.

Looks like it may have a draw. When you charge or get new battery, put a test light (not led type) in series with negative battery cable and negative battery post with cable disconnected and key off. If you have a drain the light will light.

If it's drawing that much then just hooking up the battery will make
a spark when the second terminal is touched. If you don't have a test light that is. There should be something getting hot too I would think. What did the amp guage say when it was running?

Thanks for the suggestions. I talked to my buddy and he immediately pinpointed it to a bad diode after I told him the symptoms. Low and behold it was indeed bad. As far as the battery draining like it did and not being able to recharge it, he said that it's not uncommon to not be able to bring one back whereas some you can run down and charge back numerous times. At least the problem is solved.
Now on to making it pretty.
