I ventured out and bought a digital hour/tachometer for my 105 with a k241. It's a Sierra hour/ tach meter that's made for engines with up to 2 cylinders but ran into some issues with measuring the rpm. From what I read all over the internet the proper setting is 1 pulse per 2 revolutions so I set it as such but I'm getting 2400 rpm as my idle speed and 3000 rpm for wot. The engine sounds like it's running at a higher rpm at wot and it would seem that the drop between wot and idle is greater than 400 rpm. Am I doing something wrong or is my tachometer just garbage? Or maybe my k241 isn't set properly? Anyone using a digital tachometer that can chime in?

Take a video of it running, upload it to YouTube and I'll tell you if the engine is running too fast at idle.

Well.... I don't think the tach is accurate, but yes, it sounds like about 3200 at WOT. Idle sounds more to me like about 1800. Waaaaayyyy to fast. I'd say the tach is close. You need to do some adjusting.

Thanks! Really appreciate the help. So looking at the kohler service manual my idle should be at 1680 and wot at 3600 rpm. Kinda confused on slowing the idle after reading the kohler manual but I guess I'll see once I'm actually next to the engine.

I set my idle as low as it can go without stalling the engine, no reason for it to be any faster than that.

I was out adjusting the engine speed and I was able to increase the high speed but for the life of me can't get the idle to drop lower than 2200 rpm. Could elaborate on how you did it?

The idle is the screw I'm pointing with the screw driver, turn it to the left to lower the idle.

I will ad without stalling the engine when you move the tractor, or engage the PTO. The service manual is incorrect. I honestly think it's a misprint. I think it was supposed to be 680 RPM. But I don't even set them that high. 450-550 RPM is about right usually. Also, you may have to adjust the throttle lever to get it to idle lower. It may not be letting the throttle plate close all the way. |
