Default Farmall tune up parts

Okay, went to crank up my Farmall 100 and she's not getting any spark. Coil ohms out good and I've jumped 6 volts to the coil (original 6 volt system) but I'm not getting any spark out of the coil or distributor. The ignition parts are old so I was going to replace the coil, points, condenser, cap, rotor, wires and plugs. I'm sure all the stuff you can buy is cheap China crap but where do you all get your parts at?

Is this stuff garbage?

Todd, I wouldn't replace all that stuff unless it needs it. File the point, and it will likely fire right up. If you do tune it up, you won't need a coil. Just like on a CC, they last forever.

When I do buy parts for old IH's, I usually just get the parts from a local auto part store. They have books for tractors.

Okay, but I have a few questions. I probably need to like I said I would...., maybe that can happen this weekend. Where does the time go? LOL

I don't want to convert it over to 12 volts and the 6 volt system has worked fine but this machine has sat out for probably 2 years now so maybe that is an issue too.

The old battery was shot and wouldn't take a charge so I picked a new one up at TSC. I installed it but it wouldn't start so I pulled out my spark tester thingy and it wasn't getting any spark to the plugs.

I jumped 6 vdc- to the coil - terminal but I only get a very week spark sometimes. (orange in color)

I hit the points with a fingernail file and they are at about 0.020 from what I can see.

I loosened and retightened all the small ignition wires but still have no fire.

I'll give it another try tomorrow.

If you don't want to convert it don't. It probably has a poor connection somewhere, but the coil could have failed if it hasn't ran in a long while, and been sitting out. I'd be more likely to think corrosion. Those 6V systems WILL NOT start on a damp day. You have to dry the inside of the dist cap. Condensation will get in it and it won't fire. BTDT for years and years on an old Farmall 340 we had on the farm. Anytime it was damp, we pulled the cap. There was an old hair dryer in the barn hanging on a post next to the tractor for days it wouldn't start.

Just got through tuning up one of the Super A's here. You can get parts about anywhere. If placing big orders, I get them from Standard Magneto--yes he sells parts for IH distributors too. I had multiple issues with this tractor. When I hit the starter, the voltage dropped to just over 3 volts input at the coil. Looked at the wire from the starter to the amp gauge and it had a bare spot, so di the input wire to coil. Don't know if the wiring harness is original, tractor has been here since late 50's---but they were old and showing signs of needing replacing. Also changed the wire from the amp to regulator and the one back to the switch. Even replaced the short wire from coil to side of distributor. For the heck of it decided to check the plug wires--YIKES. Coil wire was literally corroded and the end broken, on both ends. TSC had a wire "kit" for $17--I was good boy and soldered the ends on. Cap didn't look good either. Since cap and rotor are cheap (had a brass insert cap on hand) I put both of them in. Points and condenser were changed last year. Plugs were old and gunky so I put in them $2.50 each at NAPA. The battery was 9 years old so I picked up a new one--old one load tested barely inside the weak zone. This is the tractor we rake hay with so I don't have time to worry with a dead battery while a thunderstorm is brewing with hay on the ground. Starter was ancient and we had a newly rebuilt in stock, been here for several years so I went ahead and put it on. Starter switch was in good shape. The last of those I bought came from NAPA--actually far better quality than the crap CaseIH was selling at the time, don't know if they have changed now or not. Battery cables all good and where the ground connects to the "dash" is polished nicely.
Hopefully try to crank it tomorrow, need to burn the fuel out of the carb before I take it off for a rebuild--leaking bad. Don't know which one it has, may be a Carter. Probably just put in needle and seat and bowl gasket after soaking.

Don't have a pic of the one I am working on, but heres the one we mow hay with. Glad to see you still have a 6 volt machine--we have 4--2 Super A's, M and a Cub.

We used to spray the distributor cap with WD 40 then wiped it off. Always worked to! I've used Steiners or Bates. I've had really good luck with Bates. I've got my dads Super M. She's mint but sits way to much!! Good luck!
