Default 2072 Engine

The 2072 was made for 3 years, 1987-1989.

Some of the Cub Cadet Literature states, that Cub used a 20HP Onan, and a 20HP Kohler. When going to the Parts Lookup Site, there is no mention of the Onan. Is this another one of Cub Cadet snafu's.....????

I heard that the very first 2072's made had an Onan but cannot confirm it to be true.

I would suspect that is the case. I also heard the Kohler didn't offer a 20hp magnum when the 2072 was first produced but when it came out Cub switched over to them. This is all just what I heard and could be total b.s, I've never thought to research it further.

Should have stayed with Onan IMO. Cost was probably the reason to go to Koehler.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
