When removing the clutch shaft coupling, do you just tap out the spirol pin with a punch?

Best to use a spirol pin punch.
Pick up a set, they will come in handy. A regular punch will suffice though if need be. Be sure and support the driveshaft before whaling away on it too much. |

I got my set from Sears, bought them 10 y.a. still punchin'
Using a 3/8 deep socket and extension makes it come in real handy for those hard to reach places.

Here's the set I bought. The punch tip has a little nipple on it to center it on the roll pin. Keeps it from skidding off and reduces likelihood of mushrooming the pin. Amazon actually has a bunch of different sets if you search for "roll pin punch set."

Thanks for the responses. Suggestions on best way to support the shaft? Also since I have never removed a spirol pin before, is there a top/bottom or is it like a standard roll pin in that way?

The pin does not have a top/bottom, so can be driven either direction, but there is often an indication which way it was driven in by some mushrooming of the driven end. Drive it out the other way. PB Blaster or Kroil applied ahead of time and allowed to soak can help. Sometimes some heat is helpful but don't overheat any oil seals. Worst case (only had to do this once on the base of the manual lift lever on a 108) drill it out with a carbide drill bit. Standard drill bit won't cut the hardened spring steel in the pin.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
