I'm entertaining the idea of dropping a cheap Predator engine in a narrow frame cub 100 while I'm rebuilding the 14 horse Kohler that was in the same 100. The frame has been chopped up a little, so the damage was already done before I got it. Depending on how the rebuild goes, I may or might not re-install the rebuilt 14 horse in the 100. I also have a 149 that needs an engine. What I'd like to know is the good , the bad, and the ugly of installing engines other than Kohler into old cubs. What sort of problems does one find in hooking everything up together. I'd love to hear from you pullers who do this all the time and what sort of tricks you have found to make these changes not quite so impossible. Thanks, Carpetbagger

I can’t remember if it was “ lawn and garden tractor “ magazine or “cadet connection” that had an article showing a 22 hp predator installed in an original I believe. The guy put it in backwards and had to put a planetary gear set in to spin the engine the right way. I don’t recall why he didn’t just spin the engine around as it seemed like a lot of extra work and cost. It was definitely interesting though.

I wonder if maybe his Predator was a vertical shaft of something. I didn't read the article, but I can't imagine someone going to all that trouble either. I'm also wondering about the different ways of hooking the clutch up to a odd engine. Would you use the same three prong thing to connect the engine and clutch? That would seem like the logical thing to do, if possible, and ,if not, what then??

The main problem with putting a twin in a narrow or wide frame is the motor needs to go down 1 3/8 inches. There are people making a clutch hub for the Predator. Mike

You didn't mention what you used/use the 100 for, but assuming it's used for more than joy riding, the first thing that comes to my mind is the PTO system. How would you drive the mower deck if mowing would be one of your tasks? Is the Predator set up to accept an electric PTO?
Second thing is starting/ignition harness would have to be rewired since you will not be using s/g or v/r. Not a big deal unless you wanted to go back to the original setup. |

They showed me how precious little I do know about this sort of thing. The guy in the video seems to be a superman genius when it comes to figuring out fixes for the "opportunities" that pop up every time he starts a new phase of his project.
