I have a strange problem with the belt on the 54 in deck. I have confirmed that the unit is mounted correctly to the mule drive and that the pulleys are the right ones and spinning well.
The Cub belt is supposed to be 91 11/16 in length. When I bought one it was too long. The pulleys on the mule drive almost hit the front of the mule drive frame. I have been using generic Farm store 91 in belts. They have been working OK, but tend to flip over in the pulleys after an hour of hard use. What brand and length of belt works for people with this deck? Is there a certain belt construction that works better then others?

For starters, Did you confirm that the number on the belt matches the sleeve it was in? I have gotten many belts delivered by parts stores that were placed in wrong sleeves and returned to store then put back on shelf.

Are the pulleys the correct diameter? The PTO is the larger 6" size. The mule pulleys are 5" The Cub Cadet belt is 954-3001. It lasts years for me with my 54" deck and sees its share of long field grass cutting.
I currently am using a Kevlar belt from Vbeltsupply. 91". Second season of use and looks good. Vbeltsupply currently has a sale until tomorrow, 5/29. Promo code is MD30

This is from the Cub belts and blades guide. 954-3001 is 91-11/16" long the 954-3071 is 88-1/2" long.
![]() Edit: Looking at the approved attachments list for the 1541 I do not see the 54 GT listed. That said what size PTO do you have?

Thanks for the suggestions.
I did check the numbers on the belt, they are correct. I will check the pulleys. I assumed that I used the right ones when I got the 54 inch deck. I can't remember everything I did at the time. I think this may be the problem. My Cub was a 1541 when I got it. It is basically an 1864 now. Replaced the front axle, added power steering and re-powered with ECH-640 Command. The PTO is 6".

Post a pic of the mule drive showing what holes you have the deck carriage mounted in.

Kind of confirmation of whats been said here. I run the 954-3001
belt from Cub Cadet on my 54 inch deck on 1862. PTO pulley is 6" 2 drive pulleys are 5 " and the main deck pulley is just short of 6" Carriage is mounted on the top rear hole of the 3 shown in Sams Pic. have replaced one belt in 7 years and this thing sees some heavy duty mowing. I kinda like the wild and woolly look around here. Ken |

The carriage is mounted on the rear hole of the bottom row. My mule drive has four holes in a square pattern. This is what the manual shows as the correct location.
I will be taking this apart over the weekend. Hopefully I will find the root cause.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
