My 1641 was running fine and while mowing I hit a small chunk of wood and she just stopped cold. Started back up fine but now the mower doesnt engage when I activate the PTO..I dont see anything obvious that may be wrong with belts or anything on the deck....any thoughts on where I can begin the search for the issue?

Next I would verify power is getting to the PTO.

Also check that possibly the deck belt broke.

Or the PTO or deck belt flipped off the pulleys.

Ok so I finally got to check her out and with one problem fixed yet another surfaces.
For the PTO issue, while turning the blade a small chunk of wood fell out. I thought there is no way that small piece had her in a bind but I climbed on, she started up and the PTO engaged. (All belts are on straight and it looks like normal operation to me from the seat) I lowered the deck and then raised the deck and now......the right side (as you are sitting on the mower) of the deck lifts up normally and the left side lifts but is way lower than the right side....I have looked at all of the connections where the deck mounts and don't see any obvious issues. I turned off the mower and stepped on the top of the deck with my leg and it will level out, but when I move the left side falls down. ????????? |

Check under the tractor to see that the left deck hanger is properly attached to the rockshaft mounting pin. Maybe the cotter pin that keeps the deck hanger in place is damaged...the deck support hanger may have come off the mounting pin and now is "hung up" on the bent cotter pin, causing it to hang lower...just a thought...

Good news is that it now seems to lift at the same time but only after raising and lowering the deck numerous times. It is really a mystery to me but something was out of whack and self corrected as I drove . I did find one issue that may have been the problem.
I checked every nut, cotter pin and every other link and all looks good except one item. See diagram attached... . I noticed that the bars that raise the deck (No. 31 and 32) were installed incorrectly on my Cub, 32 was where 31 should be and vice versa. Also, the diagram shows 32 to be installed on the outside of Frame Assembly Inner Lift No. 21. This has to be an error since there is not enough tolerance between the nut assembly (No. 30) and the Frame Assembly Outer Lift No. 22. Also, note that 31 mounts to the inside of the frame I noticed that when mine operated, the nut made contact every so slightly with the frame. Its possible this created the issue not sure, however, I moved No. 32 and the nut attachments to the inside of the frame and it has operated fine ever since and there are no clearance issues. If anybody has any thoughts to the contrary lay it on me. |

I have mine exactly as the diagram and there definitely is very little clearance for the right side. I have not experienced the issue you had but I can tell it has rubbed/bumped it from time to time.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
