Default 129 deck belt question

Finally got my 129 operable. On the lowest deck setting it keeps throwing the belt. Far as I can tell, everything is adjusted properly. Current belt is an OEM 490489 belt. Looks fairly new, but has lots of nicks due to ALOT of problems prior to me owning it.

Going to try a new belt. From what I read, the 490489 is a 80" X 1/2" belt. Then I read elsewhere and it's a 81" X 1/2"?

Will a Gates Equipment 80"x1/2" green belt be a suitable replacement?

Thanks! Kevin

Default belt

Depending on which deck you have, you might need a 3/8" belt.

Forgot to add that, I have a 3 blade 42" deck.

Have seen the above mentioned belt listed as 1/2" AND 3/8" also?

Thanks!

Well took the deck off this morning and noticed some play in the center spindle bearing. Think this is allowing the pulley to tilt and prolly not helping matters. When I serviced the deck, clean and greasing everything along with sharpening the blades everything seemed tight. Guess it didn't last long.

Looks like I need to either replace the center spindle or just the bearing along with the belt now.

Someone previous to me had the center spindle of my deck apart. Put everything back together with upper and lower housing on top and bottom of deck. Compensated with a bunch of washers. Didn't work real well.

That lowered the center of the pulley (among other things), and just in general caused a mess.

I dont think you will have very much luck with the Gattes belt lasting very long.
As the deck belts run with twists and bends in it and is design to take the abuse where other belts are not designed to take that kind of abuse.

The Gates green belts work good for this. I have one that's lasted me several seasons on my various 82 series tractors. They're more expensive than the OEM belts, so there isn't any savings by using one, though.

I think there is a misconception on a lot of parts, especially belts, that OEM costs more than aftermarket. In a few things, that may be true, but I have found that for a good quality belt, that OEM belts are priced fairly competitive against the aftermarket ones, and sometimes cheaper. This is true for Cub Cadet, John Deere, etc. You may find them cheaper, but they're usually inferior than OEM and you're end up paying more in the long run by trying to save a few dollars buying aftermarket.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
