Default Smokey the 782

Last year, my 782 started to smoke a little at start up. This year, she smokes a lot at startup, and at slow down after mowing. The smoke clears after a little bit. Fuel consumption is normal.

There is oil in my air cleaner housing. I already changed the crankcase vent and the tube is not clogged either. I had one of the heads off earlier this year, and the cylinder looked good. Could I have bad valves?

Anyone have this happen before? How much longer will the engine live? I hope the move to flat ground from the slight hillside I live on now will help prolong the life of the engine. I think it is a Series II, but the air cleaner housing just says Kohler, 17HP. I'm running SAE30 oil.

Thanks!

Valve guides need to be pressed in, don't they? I may be motor hunting soon.

I'm not saying yours isn't, but most Series II engines will say "Kohler 17 Series II" on the air cleaner. One way to tell is look at your spec number on the ID tag. If it's not a series II, I wouldn't mess with doing any overhauling to a Series I.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
