Default 582 special w/miss fire

I happen to have a 582 speical with a twin cylinder 16 hp Briggs and Scrapem motor in it. ( I know silly me) The other day I went to fire it up to mow the grass and it was only fireing on one cylinder.

Seems the left cylinder(as seen from the seat) spark plug died.

SO! I pull the plug, and hop on the rice grinder and head to town for a couple of new plugs.

Get back home, install new plugs in both cylinders, so far so good.

Twist the key and it fires up only to run on the left cylinder and no fire on the right cylinder.

Old spark plug is a Champion CJ12C new replacement spark plug is a Champion CJ12YC

Put old plug back in and it now fires on both cylinders.

Whats up?

I did find the problem but only after a few choice words tossed in the direction of the counter man at the hardwear store where I purchased the plugs.

Anyone care to guess what the problem was?

Lonny

I have a command 18 that would do that. Basicly when it was idling or not much over idle it would fire fine, using spark testers. When I would run it half to full throtal, it would stop firing. I changed the plugs, no differance. Changed the coils, running fine still today.

Maybe something in the coil. If I remember right, it has a coil like the 682 and 782 one coil with 2 leads. If this is right maybe your lead is shorting out.

I have also seen a coiil be bad out of the box. Fortunately, I was swapping it out with a mechanic standing there in the Jxxx Dxxxx service bay or they would have never believed me.

Champion was the problem. Take those junk plugs out and go buy some Autolites for it.

Well the problem was simple to solve once I removed the plug.

Seems that the hole for the plug on the right head is closer to the valves than the left head.

One of the valves came up and slamed shut the plug gap, = no fire.

Apond closer inspection I found the overlaying problem.

The electrode on the Champion CJ12YC is not a flush fit, it protrudes out past the end of the threads aprox 1/4 inch, just far enough to get hit by the valve.

I doubled checked the left head and all is fine with that plug, so now I have to go find a set of Champion CJ12C plugs and not CJ12YC.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
