The condition of the bigger air breather and muffler, since they are specific to that tractor and rare. Maybe condition of the motor or if it has a 13fin motor in it. Besides that, it's just a 149 with a 16hp motor so nothing else special to look for specific to that tractor. Everything is fixable on it using standard wide frame parts. Mine had a lot of small issues and I was able to fix it all and restore it nicely.

Just make some mental notes about replacement costs before you go to look at it. The big ticket items are tires, seat, starter-gen and mower deck spindles. Take the condition of these into account, and of course the hydro and motor when making your final offer.
Good luck, and let's see those pics when you drag it home. ![]() |

The correct air cleaner and muffler are the main things to look for.

If it has the 13 fin motor and is priced less then $600, grab it. I have seen the air cleaner covers for sale but the original big mufflers are long gone. It should also have the hour meter on the left side noise reduction side panel. The hydro lift was standard but some were shipped with a manual lift. The engine is about the only thing that is hard to find. The other stuff is the same on the 1X8, 1X9 models.

Muffler is the biggest hard to find part other than the original engine itself. The heat shield that's above the muffler is 169 only specific as well. These are being remade, though. If the left panel with hour meter is missing, you can take a regular left shield, cut a hole with a hole saw and add an hour meter. I'm pretty sure the air cleaner cover is close to being the same as the round cover for a series II 17. You'd just have to paint yellow and cut a hole in it. 169's are nice tractors. I love using mine. Good luck and keep us posted!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
