i know this has been covered a thousand times and i have read many of them. we just got a cub dealer here in town and i went to talk to them about the type of hytran fluid they carried and gave them the cub fluid number. they showed me the fluid which is made by harvest king. universal. and on the back it says recommended for replacement of international harvester hytran fluid B-6. what are your thoughts?

Does the hydrostat fluid circulate both through the hydro pump and the rear end gears on the cadet?
I pulled the plug out of mine yesterday afternoon at the top of the rear of the rear end gears and could not reach the fluid with my little finger. Obviously its going to need some. I was thinking my full size Cub used 90 or 140 weight in the gears. Dave |

Yes, it is the same fluid...the rearend is the reservoir for the hydro pump. A Farmall Cub probably uses 90W, but these don't. This information is in the service manual and owner's manual. cmatthew- The generic fluids don't seem to handle water the same way that Hytran does. When water is mixed with Hytran, it globs up and sticks to the inside of the transmission or goes to the filter and stays there where it can't hurt anything; generic fluid does not do this- it stays completely separate from the water. The generic fluid may meet the same specs, but it's not the same stuff. |

You can use whatever you want. It is your tractor. There is NO equivalent to HyTran. It is a patented formula. There are similar fluids but that is it.
Here is what is recommended.... HyTran

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
