I was working on the 149 today and the Starter/Gen started making a lot of racket when the engine was turning over. I took the belt off to make sure it was the starter and it was. The bearing felt okay and their was no end play. While cranking the engine though I grabbed the pulley and was able to stop it from turning while it was supposed to be cranking. Sometimes when I m trying to start the tractor I have to bump the starter depending on where the piston position is. After the tractor ran for a minute the starter sounded fine and again fine when I re-started the engine. I know it is charging properly and turning over at a good rate and cleaned my connections. Any ideas? I did not think I should be able to stall the pulley! Thanks, Mark

Are you talking about the small pulley on the S/G itself?
No, it is supposed to have a square key to hold it in place. I can't imagine it could have sheared, but sounds like it's gone missing somehow. Time to remove the pulley for a look. |

Yeah the small pulley that the belt rides on. It is still keyed. With the belt off when I turn the pulley it does not turn separate from the insides. Everything feels intact. I just went out and started it again without an issue.

So are you saying that the starter is not capable of overcoming the resistance you can offer with your hand?
I'd probably not try that, but since it's also possible to turn the engine over by the same hand, I'm not sure it's indicative of much. I suppose if it's very easy to stall the thing by hand you could have a weak starter. More likely a weak battery or dirty cables (power and ground ) Have you checked those? John

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
