Default 149 lost it's oomph!

Sorry about this one guys but I took some bad advice and now im in a pickle. I tried adjusting the throttle linkages on my 149 for a smoother response. Seemed like it didn't really react from low throttle untill I hit about mid throttle. I took everything apart and tried adjusting springs and nothing seemed to work. Then I think I made the mistake, I loosened the governor arm on the pin that it rides on. I thought it was just a swivel pin but I guess it isn't. There is nothing in the service manual or owners manual to tell me how to set this back up. The tractor is now running fine but I can tell it isnt quite as fast or powerful as it was. I set all the other linkages and springs where they were. Any ides? Thanks, Mark

In the technical library section there is a kohler service manual that explains that procedure.

Easy to do with four hands or a helper! All in the manual and pretty easy to do jsut got to have some help holding everything in place while you set it. I use vise grips to hold the gov shaft and hold the throttle open with one hand and tighten the nut and bolt using spare fingers and my other hand.

Jacobson GT 10 with mower. DR Lawn vac tow behind,Home made lawn roller. Brinly cart, 2 off brand carts and 1 home made cart.

Section 6 of the Kohler service manual of this web site. when I adjust the govenor I always warm the engine up. It's usually warmed up anyway but just a thought.

Thanks guys for the Kohler manual. It was a real help. I ended up adjusting the gov shaft and then also move the spring down one hole. I put a digital tach on the engine and ended up that my low idle was only about 1050 which was way lower than the recommended 1600. I brought it up to 1500 and it idles soo much smoother now. On the high throttle I was maxing out at 3050 and the manual stated a max rpm of 3600 so I raised it up to 3500rpm. Now it is running beautiful again and almost no gov hunting at all. Do you cut grass with this 149??

If so consider raising the max RPM to the specified speed. Engine speed effects blade tip speed and these Cubs were a little slow on blade speed from the factory compared to other colors.

I was always dissatisfied with the mower cut of mine until I raised the engine speed.

For a yard puller, the lower speed is great!! I have my QL 1000 set way below 3600 RPM.

No I dont mow with it. The deck that came with it has a few rust holes in it and I'm not sure about if I will have them fixed or not. I'm really just using it to plow snow and pull a wagon around the yard. I thought it would be better to set the max rpm a little lower in hopes of keeping the engine together. I have no idea how many hours are on it and I do not want to have to rebuild it! Mark
