I just bought a Cub Cadet 1450 and it ran fine. My wife was using it to pull a lawn cart. When she tried to restart it...no compression. I pulled the spark plug and the piston is not moving. I checked the oil ( a little late for that
) and it was low. I am guessing the rod broke. It is a 14 HP Kohler, but I haven't looked to see the model yet.My questions: Is my assumption about the rod being broke valid; how hard is it to replace the rod and are their any tricks or secrets anyone could share?

Yeah if the piston isn't moving, the rod is broken. Download the service manual from Kohler's website and start reading. That'll tell most anything you need to know.

If your lucky and the rod didn't do any damage to the block, you may be able to simply replace only the rod. Hopefully some of the guys that have done some of the mods for a QL will post their links.
Being that your 1450 is a Quiet Line Series, you will more than likely need to replace your engine ISO mounts, also it would be a great time to replace and repair your drive line, IE: drive shaft, bushings, and rubber discs. Also a good time to check the condition of the trunion and linkages and weld and repair the trunion and replace the springs. Turns out the starter was not jumping out to engage the flywheel. What I heard was just the starter running. When I took off the side covers I could see the fly wheel was not turning. In turning the fly wheel by hand, there was compression. Further investigation showed the starter was rsuty and not jumping out. Dodged the bullet on this one, and promptly chnaged the oil and made sure it was full.
Thanks for all of the links as I now have a pretty comprehensive manual for future use.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
