What is this attachment?

I picked this up yesterday because I've not seen one before. It appears rather old. I don't believe it was homemade. Any ideas of it's name, use, age?

Think of it as a wheel barrow and shovel combined. It was used to clean out barns you would scrap the ground to fill it up then reverse the pull and haul it out. you could hitch it to a horse or pull it buy hand if someone else was around to run the handles. It was a lot of work.

I guess it would be one of the earliest forms of a skid loader. haha

The fellow I got it from wanted it for "yard art" but knew nothing about it either. That is just what I thought it was for, a supersized pooper scooper that took two people to operate. Thanks for the info.

Its called a slip scoop. Its really the earliest form of a scraper.

My Dad had one of those back in the years of the Farm. You hook up a chain behind a tractor and a person walks behind as the tractor pulls it and you can scoop dirt. AH.........you better have some real strong arm muscle to wrestle the handles up to unload it......

It's relatively heavy empty. Dumping it when it's full of dirt, even for a few hours, would be tiring I should think.

I believe I'll hang it under roof and let the kids figure out what to do with it one day but first I want to run the thing to see how well it works. Should I paint it before putting it up? It's pretty well pitted but still thick enough that it's not about to have a hole.

One of my friends grandfather dug a foundation for a college building in Pittsburgh with that,

He said there was close to a hundred of them, pulled by horses, digging for months.

It is a huge building!!

If used day in and day out, day after day, it would create a huge hole. I wouldn't want to mess with the fellow that did it afterward.

First pic is the set up behind my 1650. Second is the front ports. It could go on front or rear but I'd never get around to mounting it. Too many other things to do first.

That scoop brings back some memories. My grandfather had one and used his old Farmall H to pull it. He dug his house foundation using it. Don't know who helped him though. My dad did all the landscaping around his house with it too. I can recall my grandfather, very hard of hearing, on the Farmall and dad on the handles of the scoop. It is a bit of a balancing act to get the scoop to dig dirt. Not enough angle and it just slides along too much angle and you will find yourself flipped over the scoop. My grandfather would just drive ahead and poor dad would yell whoa about four times till grandpap would stop. By that time the scoop would have flipped and dumped the load. I even used it a few times but unless you want a real workout do not try it.
